What is SEO?

Here is a very simple description of what Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is.

Having your website show up in the search results is not an exact science as it’s all up the ‘Google Gods’

Saying that, if you give Google what it wants, then it will rank you well in the search results.

It’s referred to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and there are two main aspects of SEO. On-Page and Off-Page.

On-Page SEO

Without complicating it too much, Google wants fresh, relevant, useful and frequent content on your website.

Basically this means adding new pages (or blog posts) with useful information that people (customers) want to read, watch and listen to often. Regular additions to your website is a great way to go. Text, video, audio, images and info-graphics are great to include in these regular updates. Typically this is writing articles (blog posts) around a particular keyword you would like to rank for.

Off-Page SEO

Off-Page SEO, in a nutshell, is creating links that point back to your website with the idea that each link acts as a ‘vote’ for your site.

Why is the website design not the most important thing?

You could have the best looking website in your niche, with all the bells and whistles, but if it’s not making money or generating leads what good is it? If it cannot be found by Google then what good is it?

If customers do visit your best-in-the-niche website but cannot find:

your phone number to call you,
your email address to make an inquiry, or
easily find what they are looking for

then they will be clicking the back button to Google and finding your competitors.

Now I’m not saying that quality website design is not important, what I am saying is that website content, usability and search engine optimisation (SEO) must be given equal, if not more priority.

Why you don’t need a website

If you have a bricks and mortar business, for example a restaurant, you would be far better off to get your restaurant listed on local business listing and recommendation sites such as

UrbanSpoon
Yelp
TrueLocal
HotFrog
Google Places (to be found on Google Maps)

These sites are free to list and are already ranking highly in Google so you would be mad not to get yourself on these services
